Legandary Boxing Trainer Angelo Dundee has passed away at the age of 90. Dundee trained over 15 world champions and showed up in the corners of probably half a dozen others. Came into prominence training Carmen Basillio and of course his sterling work with Ali and Ray Leonard. He was unversally accepted as one of the greatest trainers of all time.

I don't think he had the greatest of personalities...but he was obviously a great trainer.

I knew Angelo from the old 5th street gym. Brother Chris gave me several tickets to every Tuesday night fight where I would take some troubled kids I worked with. Frequented the gym quite a bit in early 70's and had contact with Angelo. Great guy. RIP

Just want to add now absolutely appalled I was with the coverage of Angelo Dundee's death by American Sports outlets. I was watching Sky Sports on the night he passed and into the following morning and Sky Sports had all sorts of tributes being called in from sportswriters, fighters and trainers throughout their broadcast. The best ESPN could come up with during that entire time frame was a tweet from Russell Crowe and later on they came up with some drivel by Jeremey Schapp which was more of an Ali piece than anything else. Appalling.
I had the pleasure of meeting Dundee once, was seated at a table with him at the Rings's 75th anniversary event, I had some questions for him but never had to ask them , eventually he got around to them and everybody else's. Oh that man could talk, couldn't get a word in edgewise. Brilliant storyteller, genuinely comical but at the same time came across as reflective and grateful. Dundee gave a lot of memorable moments but the one thing I will never forget about Dundee was the look on his face when the judges gave Wilfredo Gomez the decision over Rocky Lockridge. Priceless.
Here's a Dundee trivia question. Dundee was in the corner for everyone of Ali's fights besides one. Does anyone know which one?105

Ellis.
My fave Dundee moment was probably the glove episode in the norton fight.

The first champion Dundee was in the corner of was Carmen Basillio and Dundee tells a great story about the rematch with Sugar Ray Robinson. In a rough first round both fighters got to fouling. Basillio was elbowiing and butting and Robinson was rabbit punching and the referee who was Frank Sikora didn't do anything about it. A few times during the round Basillio put his open palm in Robinsons face and pushed him away. When Robinson got back to his corner after the first he complained that it felt like Basillio had something hard in his glove. During the second round one of Robinson's seconds a guy by the name of Honey Brewer made his way over to Basillio's corner literally hiding under the ring and when the bell rang to end the second round tried to get in the ring in Basillio's corner presumably to check Basillio's glove and Basillio's manager at the time who went by the name of Tubby Joe Netro clobbered him before he could get up the steps.

Indeed. Another great one, not as widely known as dundee as Petronelli's work was really done with one fighter and that was Hagler. Much like Jack Blackburn's relationship with Louis, the Petronelli's built a legendary fighter who was unbeatable for a very long time. That takes a committment from both fighter and corner that has to stand up to not only the stress of strain of high level compaetition but also put aside all the little things that tend to send fighers and trainers into tizzy's and lead to the end of the relationship. Thanks for bringing attention to him Kimba.

Legendary Dundee moment was him cornering Pinklon Thomas vs Tyson, and cursing out Flip Homansky at the end of the 1st round after Thomas took a pounding.

Spot on.
Back in the 80's I delved into the world of boxing promoting.
Had occassion to meet virtually everyone who was anyone in that world.
Head and shoulders above all others was Angilao Dundee.
Honest, straightforward - kept his word.
The rarest of creatures in the cesspool that is pro boxing.
His treatment by the general sports media is testament to just how far boxing has fallen in the eyes of 'mainstream' sports editors.Q. What is the difference between an Irish wake and an Irish wedding?
A. One less drunk.
