Has anyone here ever caught a glimpse of this book? I'm considering buying it, but I'd like to know if it's worth the $40-70 I see it going for on Ebay. Thanks! Rebel

I just love collecting these types of books. My personal fave is actually a bit different. It's a book of the Ring Ratings from the 1930-1980s if I'm not mistaken.Originally posted by EBIHARA63:

Well I purchased this book on Ebay about 2-3 days ago and I'm awaiting it's arrival. I purchased it for a total of $11.29.

That is a more realistic price-IMO not worth $40-70 US Originally posted by Rebel:

Well after about three weeks, I finally received the book. I don't agree with Sugar's ratings but it's still a worthwhile read.
To this day, I still don't understand why many old-timers rate Dempsey as a top 5 all-time fighter. In this book it seems that he bases this ranking based on Dempsey's popularity during that era. Per Sugar's logic, wouldn't De La Hoya then be top 5 also?

It's not unique to Boxing, all athletes of the 20's are ;egendary, Dempsey, Bobby Jones, Bill Tilden, Babe Ruth,Paavo Nurmi. Man 'O'War. THose were the athletes who were at the top of their game when sport was for the first time bought to the masses via the press, film, and radio. It's kinda like your first piece of pussy, you don't marry her but you always look on her with great fondness.Originally posted by Rebel:

Now if you think of famous people of the 20's can you think of any off the top of your head besides athletes? Now fast forward to the De La Hoya era. If you were to ask anyone to the name the most famous people of the last 10=15 years think anyone is going to name De La Hoya? Bin Laden, Oprah, Jordan, Clinton, Sadamm, Bush. Further to the point ask anyone to name one fighter over that same 10-15 year period and the cahnces are they will answer Mike Tyson.
Another angle on the popularity of Dempsey and other athletes of that era, they put themselves to a certain extent never to be forgotten. Long after Dempsey retired you could always got to Dempseys on Broadway and relive the greatness, Bobby Jones left Augusta National. The House That Ruth Built. Such is the uniqueness of the roaring 20's everything was larger than life.In Dog Years I'm Dead.

Good post. I'd even go further by adding the following to its conclusion: "Everything was larger than life for the white guy and the negro and spic were inferior turds looking at the American pie from the outside."Originally posted by Michael Matos:

Is Chavez top ten? If not, that gives you an indication of its real worth. These romantic, dreamy, nostalagic old farts will never give El Gran Campeon his just due.Originally posted by Rebel:

Of course. You're forgetting that Mexicans owned the the Southwest prior to the U.S. stealing it from them. Do you really think they all ran back to Mexico? Originally posted by Orthodox Fighter:
