This announcement likely confirms the Pac/Bradley, JMM/Peterson, mini-tourney. I'm just glad we're going to see some new matchups.

I'll take it. And I agree I'm glad it's at 154 and not some bullshit catchweight. Cotto just said fuck you Bob Arum.

These guys are going to make a ton of money for this. I don't see how this fight could be boring.
The two other proposed dance partners out in the cold should fight now too. Ortiz vs. Khan"That you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name"--John 20:31

Yeah, not that excited about this match right now. 3-4 years ago might have been a different story but Cotto seems pretty on the downslide. Not quite over, but on his way. He also was never a huge puncher. I see this as a wide UD for Floyd or possible late stoppage. My 2c

Cotto's never been a big puncher, he's always been more of an accumulation guy. Regardless, it's a pretty good fight, I look forward to it.

I agree and disagree. At 140 he was a devastating puncher that KO'd guys in spectacular fashion. At 147 he didn't carry it up as much. He landed great shots on Mosley and Margarito but never really had them in big trouble but those guys are known for having great chins. Same for Malignaggi. His KO's of Judah, Gomez and Quintana were more due to an accumulation of punches.
At 154 I think it still remains to be seen how big his punching power is. I think he finished Yuri Foreman with body shots and of course Foreman's bum knee. Mayorga used to have a good chin but I think the wars have caught up to him. Cotto didn't really have him hurt until the final round. And of course the Margarito fight he was still coming forward even though Cotto was busting his face up.

I think too many are focusing on whether Cotto is a big puncher or not. Even that punch that doesn't KO you, can hurt you or get your respect enough to fight differently.
I think this fight may not be a walk in the park for Mayweather. Not that Floyd can't win, but I don't know if it will be complete domination like Pacman's was. Pac and May fight differently where Pac overwhelms from the outset and throughout. Floyd paces and picks his spots which allow his opponents to be in the fight longer for more of a chance. What Floyd does well though is stick to that pace and comfort level without departing and goes on to win.
I think Cotto will make some interesting spots early and even in the middle of the fight. Then I think Floyd will relax more and start to swell up Cotto's face a bit. Cotto may not be discouraged and still see the final bell, but not doing enough to win. Cotto's recently fought Pac, Foreman, Mayorga and Margarito. Three of those guys really bring it and put on the pressure. Floyd sometimes applies pressure these days, but nothing like Pac and Margarito. So I expect Cotto to be able to box with Floyd a bit like he did with Mosley, but he will probably always (prime or not) have been a step behind Floyd.
Mayweather UD Cotto 116-112 - 115-113 - 117-113 ish.

Good analysis, most of Cotto's recent opponents came at him and pressured him, but he does have good boxing skills. He has a fighting chance against Mayweather, he is not a HUGE puncher, but he does hit hard enough to hurt Mayweather and this bout will tell us if he has the boxing skills to actually land such a punch. Floyd's defense probably takes him to a decision win, but Cotto might just surprise us.

Highly doubt scores would be that close, dont see them being closer than 117 - 111, cotto will be lucky to win 3 rounds.
- February 7th, 2012, 08:33 PM #19
Maybe.
Mayweather has looked completely dominant against highly skilled fighters before, such as Marquez, saavy boxers, such as Genaro Hernandez when Mayweather was just becoming a star, and precision punchers like Diego Corrales, and of course decent boxers with speed in Mosley and Judah.
I don't think Cotto is shot, past his prime, yes, but shot....not yet. He is still a good figher, bigger than Marquez, better than the version of Mosley that Mayweather fought. I think Cotto is going to make it a good fight. Damn, I can't wait for this fight.

I hope Cotto stretches him. I doubt it, but it would be poetic justice.
